What is CrossFit? – Clinton Browne

In my teens I was always a very active person and played most ball sports and rode everywhere. Moving on in to my early 20’s I became very lazy and inactive, this resulted in me blowing out to a massive 95kg. To put this in perspective I’m 172cm small and of medium build. I woke up one morning very unhappy with my appearance and decided to do something about it. I tried many different modes of fitness and started competing in triathlons and cycling events around Queensland.
As time went by and with the activities I was doing, I considered myself to be Fit …
November 2010, Dale and Adam opened Crossfit Alive at Oxenford on the Gold Coast. I had little exposure to Crossfit and was interested to see what it was all about. I went to the open day which consisted of a workout of the day (WOD) called the ‘Helen Challenge’ (Helen?? I’ll get to that soon) and was instantly hooked. I had been pushed to a new place both physically and mentally. Fast forward to today and I have NEVER been so fit, strong and happy in my entire life.
So you have Googled ‘Crossfit’ and you’re blown away, confused with acronyms like WOD, Rx’D, GHD, IWCABTAMD, CVFMHI or workout names like Fran, Cindy, Annie, Helen and what’s a Clean & jerk or a Snatch that sounds nasty right? Worry no more! The support and friendship you’ll get from not only the coaches and athletes at Crossfit Alive but the whole Crossfit community is amazing. I can tell you standing in the middle of the box (meaning Gym) mid WOD (Work of the Day) watching 16+ people give it their all, will give you a sensation that can not be matched by any other sport or fitness format. Electrifying!
Put simply Crossfit is the best addiction you will ever have.
I’ll leave you with my favourite Crossfit saying “Your life will not get any better if you do not lift heavy shit!”
… don’t get scared off as everything is scalable to fit everyone’s abilities so “heavy shit” means what may be heavy for you.
